Pang

  • Pang
Pang also known as Pomping World, Hepburn: Ponpingu Wārudo, is a cooperative two player arcade video game released in 1989 by the Mitchell Corporation. The North American release from Capcom was titled Buster Bros. The basic gameplay is identical to a much earlier 1983 MSX Japanese computer game called Cannon Ball (also released in 1983 on the ZX Spectrum as Bubble Buster). Cannon Ball was made by Japanese publishers Hudson Soft, and possibly inspired Mitchell Corp. to make Buster Bros. six years later Destroy the balls by shooting them, but don't let them hit you or they can kill you! In Pang, the Buster brothers must finish a round-the-world quest to destroy bouncing balloons that are terrorizing several of Earth's landmarks and cities.

  • Pang Wiki

Pang (パン Pan), also known as Pomping World (Japanese: ポンピング・ワールド Hepburn: Ponpingu Wārudo), is a cooperative two-player arcade video game released in 1989 by the Mitchell Corporation. The North American release from Capcom was titled Buster Bros..

The basic gameplay is identical to a much earlier 1983 MSX Japanese computer game called Cannon Ball (also released in 1983 on the ZX Spectrum as Bubble Buster). Cannon Ball was made by Japanese publishers Hudson Soft, and possibly inspired Mitchell Corp. to make Buster Bros. six years later.[citation needed]

In the game, the Buster brothers must finish a round-the-world quest to destroy bouncing balloons that are terrorizing several of Earth's landmarks and cities. The fight to save the Earth begins on Mt. Fuji, Japan, where the brothers must pass all three stages before moving on to the next location. Conversions for home systems were produced by Ocean Software in 1990 for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Commodore Amiga, MS-DOS and Atari ST.

    Game scenario

There are 50 stages at 17 locations: Mt. Fuji, Mt. Keirin, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Angkor Wat, Ayers Rock, the Taj Mahal, Leningrad, Paris, London, Barcelona, Athens, Egypt, Kenya, New York, Maya ruins, Antarctica, and finally Easter Island.

Each location has a unique background that shows the area's most famous landmarks. The stages contain a different layout of blocks, some that disappear after being shot, others that do not, and still others that are hidden and can reveal bonuses.

The stages start with differing numbers and sizes of balloons. The largest balloon divides for the first three times it is popped; after the fourth and smallest balloon is popped it vanishes. Each player starts with a single harpoon. When a balloon is popped, special weapons may drop down.

    The other weapons include:

Double Wire - a twin harpoon that will allow two shots at once.
Power Wire - a grappling hook that will stay attached to the ceiling or block for a short period of time. This time can be decreased by rapidly pressing the fire button.
Vulcan Missile - a high-caliber gun that works much like a machine gun allowing rapid shots.
There is no ammunition limit to any weapon. The names of the weapons differ between the monitor bezel (given above) and the game's attract mode. Other bonuses include:

    A force field.
An hourglass that slows the balls down.
A clock which stops the balls for a short time.
Dynamite that will pop all of the balloons down to their smallest size simultaneously.
At a certain point in the stage, a food item will drop down that is worth several hundred (or thousand in the later stages) bonus points. These are different and of increasing value, until a 48,000-point cake slice is reached; thereafter the bonuses are all cake slices, alternating between 48,000 and 50,000 points.

If a player touches a balloon of any size, the player dies and both players must start the stage again.

When both players touch a balloon at the same time, only Player 1 will lose a life but this is somewhat offset because when both players reach a bonus or weapon simultaneously only Player 1 will get it.

Players start with 3-5 lives depending on the dip switch setting. Extra lives are also given when certain point totals have been accumulated. The stage ends when all of the balloons are successfully cleared. The game ends after all stages have been completed and our heroic duo ride their jeep into the sunset on an Easter Island beach.

In some later versions, there are more than 17 locations.

    Reception

The original, and the conversions, were all critically acclaimed, although minor complaints were made about the ZX Spectrum's multi-load system. The Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC+/GX4000 conversion was available on cartridge only.

The ZX Spectrum version was awarded 94% in the February 1991 issue of Your Sinclair and was placed at number 74 in the "Your Sinclair official top 100". Amiga Power were even more enthusiastic, listing it as the 11th best game ever in their initial Top 100 list, published with Amiga Format in April 1991 as a preview of the magazine.

    Sequels

    This game has several sequels:

Super Buster Bros. (a.k.a. Super Pang, 1990)
    Pang! 3 (a.k.a. Buster Buddies, 1995)
    Mighty! Pang (2000)
    Pang: Magical Michael (2010)
    Pang Adventures (2016)

    Compilation

The first three versions of the game were released as a compilation on the PlayStation under the name of Super Pang Collection (Buster Bros. Collection in North America) in 1997. Buster Bros and Super Buster Bros were also included in the PSP game Capcom Puzzle World in 2007.

    Weapons

The weapons are the main way to destroy ballons. Here's a list of allweapons with a short descrption.

    Harpoon

This is the standard weapon, you'll start with it. Can hit the balloons withthe point and with the rope. The shot disappears as it reaches a target oranother obstacle.

    Double harpoon

It's like the harpoon, but you can shoot twice in a row.

    Machinegun

This is the fastest and most powerful weapon, but looses all advantages givenby rope-weapons. It is useless when you have to pop only little balloons. Itcannot destroy crystal walls.

    Grapple

It works like the harpoon, but it freezes for a short time when reaches aplatform edge. Useful in narrow stages.

    Fruits

There are many types of fruits, take them to increase your score. Also you can pop it with your weapon, but there is a reduction of pointsearned.

    Various

Here's a list of items that you'll find playing the game, with its effect.

    Clock

Get this to freeze the balloons and creatures for a bit. Until they move you'reinvincible.

    Hour-glass

Getting it you'll slower all the balloons for a short time.

    Dynamite

Get it and all the balloons will pop till the smallest size. Don't get it whenthere are a lot of big balloons! It will be a disaster!

    Extra life

This player-shaped bonus gives you an extra life.

    Bubble barrier

Get it and a barrier will surround you. The barrier will disappear if hit bya balloon (the impact act like a shot, so the balloon will split or pop) orwhen the stage ends.

    Star

I've seen it only once in the world tour mode, this one will destroy all theballoons in the stage and gives you a lot of points.

    Game modes

After pushing the start button, you'll be ask to choose a game mode, betweenpanic mode an world tour mode.

    About panic mode

This is the non-stop mode of playing. It is important that you learn how tosurvive in the world tour mode before playing this one. The balloons keeppouring down, and there is no power up or weapon to get (but you'll start withdouble harpoon). Also, there is always in each balloon a flashing lv.1balloon that stops time for 2 seconds. It is always the balloon on theleft side (example: got a lv.2 balloon. Pop it and it will split in two lv.1.The left one is flashing.)(example #2: got a lv.3 balloon. Pop it and it willsplit in 2 lv.2 balloons. Pop the one on the left, will split in 2 lv.1balloons. The one on the left is flashing.).For the exagons repeat the same things but on the opposite side.Destroying balloons and exagons you'll full a bar in the bottom of the screen. When the bar is full you'll change level: changing level means that all theballoons will slow down (in fact the speed always increases). There is also a special balloon that will appear, changing from green to orange. When it's green, it acts like a time stop for some seconds, when it'sorange will destroy all balloons and exagons on screen.

    About world tour mode

Try to get to the end of the game passing 40 different stages. You will pass a stage when you'll pop all the balloons before time runs out.

    General strategy

This advices are helpful in both modes.

1 Learn how balloons bounce, and also when you can pass under them.
2 Pop balloons with rope sideway shooting before they reach your position and move away as soon as possible. If you have double harpoon, shoot two times quickly.
3 Don't get the machinegun when there are no big balloons.
4 Don't get the dynamite when there are big balloons.
5 Always get the clock waiting a big balloons to get closer, then move under and shoot quickly.
6 Killing the creatures will give you points, but remember that a roaming animals can pop balloons.
7 Don't stay in the corners, because you'll close by yourself a potential exit to a dangerous situation!
8 When you have to use a ladder to reach lower parts of the stage, start going down and move left or right while you're still on the ladder to let you fall down. This way it will be safer.
