Nick and Tom game is a platform game that’s like the old Bubble Bobble if you ever remember playing that. Snow Bros. - Nick & Tom is a 1990 Arcade Game by Toaplan, starring the eponymous guys made of snow, who trap enemies in big snowball that are then used to crush other wandering enemies with. The game is divided into 5 stages made of 10 floors each, with a boss every 10th floor which can be damaged either by pelting it with snow (but it takes a long time) or by bashing it with the snowballs made with its minions.

There's nothing more to be said, it is a simple but addictive game that received a few ports, a couple of obscure sequels and that gets often compared to Bubble Bobble, even if it's not really the case.

    Gameplay

The gameplay of Snow Bros. is similar to Bubble Bobble, released in 1986. The game supports up to two players, with each player taking the part of one of two snowmen, Nick and Tom. Each player can throw snow at the enemies. The player must throw snow at each enemy until it is completely covered and turns into a snowball. An enemy partially covered in snow cannot move until it shakes it off.

Once an enemy has been turned into a snowball, the player can roll it. The snowball will rebound off of walls until eventually shattering against a wall. Any enemies the snowball rolls into are eliminated and other stationary snowballs start rolling when the rolling snowball touches them. If the player manages to take out all of the enemies with kicking one snowball (this one snowball may be used to make others bounce around as well and increase the chances to pull this trick off), bonus money will fall from the sky.

Every tenth level there is a boss. Each boss can sustain being hit a number of times. In the Sega Mega Drive port, after the 50th level, you play as one of the snow castle princesses.

When a player bowls an enemy over, it may drop a potion bottle. The color of the potion lets the player know what special power-up he or she will acquire:

    Red increases walking speed.
Blue increases the amount of snow thrown, thus making it easier to cover an enemy in the snow.
Yellow increases the distance that snow can be thrown.
Green causes your character to inflate like a balloon while having the ability to fly around the screen and knock out enemies for a limited period of time.

The effects of the red, blue, and yellow potion wear off after the player loses a life. Also, both the Blue and Yellow Potions increase the power of the snow thrown from either Nick or Tom.

If the player takes too much time to complete a level an evil pumpkin head will come and try to kill the player character. It is invincible but can be stunned and sent to appear elsewhere in the level with snowballs or snow shots. After a short time, the evil pumpkin will spawn ghosts that can travel freely through the level and seek the player character. These ghosts can't be killed or stunned, so the player's only hope is to avoid them while eliminating the rest of the enemies to move on to the next screen as soon as possible.

    PLOT

The story of Snow Brothers is a basic one. King Scorch cursed brothers Nick and Tom by turning them into snowmen, and he also captured the princesses Teri and Tina because of course he does. It’s up to the brothers do to their thing and defeat the king to save their land.

    Ports

Snow Bros. was ported to the Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System and Mega Drive. Each version was published by a different company in Japan (Toaplan themselves published the Famicom version, while Naxat Soft and Tengen published the Game Boy and Mega Drive versions respectively), while the NES and Game Boy versions were published in North America by Capcom. The Mega Drive version was released exclusively in Japan.

The Game Boy version, titled Snow Bros. Jr., was released on May 24, 1991 in Japan and January 1992 in North America. It is one-player only and changes the story to compensate for this by having one of the titular Snow Brothers be kidnapped while the other sets out to rescue him. Several other aspects of the game were changed due to the technical restrictions of the Game Boy, such as bosses that originally fought in pairs in the arcade version now fight alone and potions are now given different shape due to the Game Boy's lack of color display. The Game Boy version also adds an extra set of 10 levels after the 50 levels adapted from the arcade version are cleared.

The NES version, titled Snow Brothers in North America and Europe, was released in November 1991 in North America and December 1991 in Japan. It features a new story sequence at the beginning which depicts an origin story unique to this version in which Nick and Tom are established to be human princes who were cursed into becoming snowmen by an evil demon named King Scorch.

The Mega Drive version was released on May 28, 1993, is the only console port of the game directly developed by Toaplan themselves. It features a new opening story sequence at the start of the game, as well as 20 additional levels set after the original 50 levels, in which the player switch controls from Nick and Tom to the twin princesses Puripuri and Puchipuchi after the Snow Brothers themselves get kidnapped by a new adversary.

Ocean Software's France division had plans to release Snow Bros. on various computer platforms (such as the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST) in 1991, but they were never officially released. A ROM image of the Amiga version was leaked online in 2006.

ISAC Entertainment Co. Ltd. had released an enhanced remake of the game for iOS and Android mobile devices.

    Sequels

A sequel was released in 1994 titled Snow Bros. 2: With New Elves, known in Japan as Otenki Paradise: Snow Bros. 2. It was Toaplan's final arcade game, as the company filed for bankruptcy during the game's release. In 2002, a company known as "Syrmex Games" created an arcade game called "Snow Brothers 3 - Magical Adventure". Nick and Tom are now soccer players who shoot soccer balls instead of snowballs. It is most likely a hack of the original Snow Bros. arcade game, as it runs on similar hardware and features levels very similar to those of the original, despite new graphics and images added to the levels' backgrounds. It was Syrmex's only game and never existed as physical hardware in arcades; it is only playable via arcade machine emulators such as MAME.

    Tips and Tricks

Snow Bros does not have cheats (and I am very glad!). All of them fit into a sportive game play, you won't find any bugs-abusing dirt in here. However, there is a number of clean tips, tricks and techniques I have come up though time. Let me share those with you:

    Both-ways snow kicking technique

Sometime you are just pushing a snowball only to realize it would be better to kick it backwards. There is an easy way to do it! Simply jump over the snowball and stand in there. (Yes! You can stand in there!) Now, depending on wich way you face, the kick will throw the snowball in one direction or the other! With this little trick, you can change your mind very fast and kick a snowball backwards to get rid of that guy that's just hot on your heels!

    Snowball-Climbing technique

Once you have a snowball, you can do some things with it. For instance, you can use it to climb higher and get to un reachable places! Just stand over it and then jump, you wil get faster to higher places.

    Snowball-Climbing technique

This is the ultimate combo: use the snowballs to both climb and kick it down rolling. First you must, as always, create a full snowball out of some baddie, then stand on top of it. Now cames the tricky part, with the right timing, it is possible to both kick the snowball in any direction and jump from the top of it! Just how great is that? For the trick to work you must first kick the snowball and then very very quickly jump from it.

    Pushing up snowballs>

This is a bit of a work, but in some levels you just have to do it to make some Bills fall from the sky. You start as always, by making a snowball. Then fall down and stand right below to the snowball. Now, if you jump, you wil push the snowball up onto another platform! Also, most of the times it slides a bit left or right. Since you also went up one platform, now you can re-do the trick and push it up again. With enough skill, you will be able to quickly move a snowball to the top, to fulfill all you Bill-making plans!
    Sumo fighter to Bill trick

This is another great one. In some floors, you will encounter sumo fighters at the very top. If you are skilled enough, you can reach them and throw some snow at them, which will turn them into Bills! In order to do so, you must always jump to the higher platform that you can, and then from there use the Snowball-Climbing technique to reach the very top of the screen and shot snow at those sumo fighters, then collect your well earned Bills!

    Learn to roll more

When you kick a snowball, sometimes it will bounce of a wall and get you, making you travel with it for a while. Thats a great thing! You must learn how to take fully advantage of this! First, look at those rolling snowballs like what they truly are: a free and very very fast transportation method for you! Do not ride the balls all the way to the bottommost floor, but instead, learn tu jump (with the jump button) out of it when it suits you! Also, you don't have to ride every snowball, feel free to skip some rides and take others to where you want to go. Don't just ride at random, but learn to use this for your advantage.

Believe it or not there is even more to it! When you jump off a rolling snowball, you get an invulnerable status for a few seconds; just how great is that? This little trick is insanely useful. Let's suppose a baddie just fall into some trap and can't get out of there. The place is so small that if you try to get in there you wil be one. What do we do? Find another nearby baddie, turn him into snowball and kick him so that it bounces and comes back to you, ride it for a second and then jump of to the hole with the other baddie: you just got him! Because you are invulnerable for a few seconds, you can do all sort of kamikaze-style or rambo-like maneuvers around. Extremely useful and fun to do!

    Power Ups

If this game wasn't enought bad as it is, it does incite the use of drugs! As you ascend floor by floor, killing weirdos throwing them snow and kicking them, you may find that sometimes when they smash against a wall, a colored jar may fall off their pockets. I don't know what's in those drinks, but they turn you into a super-upper snowman. Those weirdows are also up to something, carring those colored drinks all around. Anyway, let see what they can do for you:

    Red PowerUp

The most important powerup in the game by far. It will give you a tremendous speed boost (and will make you shake your arms up and down of joy). Simply put: without the red powerup, some easy floors become a nightmare. In others, you absolutely need it to make bills. It will allow you to reach placed otherwise you couldn't. Without it, your strategy in most floors changes completely. As I said before: it is the most important PowerUp by far. Get it as soon as you can.

When you switch from walk to high speed running, you also gain the ability to reach the very top of the screen from the very beggining, even while you are still blinking (beeing invulnerable). This climbing technique is wildly used though a lot of floors, but without the red PowerUp, you will hace to find other (harder) way arounds.

Unoticed to some, it also makes you to jump not higher, but longer, thus, allowing you to reach otherwise unreachable places.

Finally, the faster you walk, the faster you can pick up food (points). You will lose it if you die.

You can find a Red PowerUp window icon for your system in my Snow Bros Icons page. They came with detailed instructions on how to use them.

    Blue PowerUp

The second most important PowerUp in the game. It is never a must, you can do without, but you will kill your snow-throwing finger. Really, without the blue PowerUp, expect to stress your snow-throwing to unhealthy levels.

If you lack it, it won't change your basic strategy for the floor. You can very much do whatever you had planned for the floor, but as I already said, will overstress the snow-throwing finger.

Without this powerup, it will take you a minimum of 7 or 8 snowshots before turning an enemy into a snowball, that is, if you are fast, on average 9 to 10 snowshots is the norm. You can mantein a 7-8 snowshots to snowball for some time, but after a while you will become tired of it and your speed will fall down. It is not a fixed amount of shots, keep in mind that the bad guy is shaking the snow off at a fixed speed, you have to fight that speed and be faster.

On the other hand, with the blue PowerUp, you can turn the bad guys into snowballs with just 3 snowshots at normal speed. It can not be done in just two, no matter how fast you are. If you are really really slow, it can take you 4 or 5 snowshots to turn a guy into a snowball.

It will wear off in case you die and loose a life.

You can find a Blue PowerUp window icon for your system in my Snow Bros Icons page. They came with detailed instructions on how to use them.

    Yellow PowerUp

This is a nice one to have, but by far the less important. It will allow you to shoot your snow farther. It cames handy sometimes, but I can't think of any screen where it is an absolute must. In the first floors can be a good help, but as you go up floors, you will be facing the baddies from much closer, thus manking this PowerUp a bit useless most of the times.

If you find a yellow drink around drink it for sure! It is alwas nice to shoot your white stuff father. However, don't expect much of it. You will lose it if you die.

    Green PowerUp

Now this is a completely different PowerUp. It has an interesting once off efect: it will inflate you to a huge ballon and you will fly freely though the screen, killing enemies as you touch them. Now, that is something, isn't it?

Also, each time you kill a monster in this way you get 8000 points, plus whatever food they drop in case they were not already into snowball form.

Fun as it sounds, it is overrated. First, those green powerups usually appears after you have clear most of the guys. Second, if you clear the whole floor in one shot (thus makning bills) do NOT drink it, or you will loose your bills and look silly flying around inflated with nothing to aim at.

My advice: if you encounter the green PowerUp in a floor which you are confortable with, and know your way around to make bills, then let it be, and go to your bill-making businesses. If on the other hand, you are in an unconfortable or ugly situation, or short on lifes, and you come across a green powerup, then drink it asap! Get the points, maybe other powerups, and clear the stage. It will give you a small break.

A game walkthrough is a guide aimed towards improving a players skill within a particular game and often designed to assist players in completing either an entire game or specific elements. Walkthroughs may alternatively be set up as a playthrough, where players record themselves playing through a game and upload or live-stream it to the internet. Walkthroughs may be considered guides on helping to enhance the experience of players, to assist towards unlocking game achievements or simply as a means to socialise with like-minded individuals as a distraction from everyday life. Walkthroughs originated as text-based descriptive instructions in magazines for playing through a video game.
